The XC Chelsea Masters is a club for both competitive and recreational masters cross-country skiers (i.e., age 30, give or take a few years, and up) run by local coaches in Chelsea and Ottawa. It offers a structured training program that is designed to bring masters skiers to a fitness level and technical ability that will allow them to improve their performance in ski races of short and long distances, ski loppets, touring events and recreational skiing. Many masters join in order to get in shape for the Gatineau Loppet or the Canadian Ski Marathon. Others simply want to get in shape for the ski season and learn to be better skiers.
What do we offer? : The XC Chelsea Masters train together almost all year round, with cross training in spring and summer (May – Aug.), dryland training in the fall (Sept. – Dec.), and on-snow training in the winter (Dec.-Mar.). Participants can chose from two options, a full program option and a half program option. The full program option includes two coached training sessions a week, a written monthly training program that will tell you how to train every day of the week, group skis, fitness testing, video analysis, and racing support. The half program option allows you to participate in one coached training session per week, group skis, video analysis, etc. (See the Registration page for details on the programs.) All participants can train together, but will be grouped into sub-groups by ability or goals with separate coaches, particularly on snow, so that their differing needs and objectives are met.
In addition the XC Chelsea Masters will offer the following in 2011-2012:
- A fall dryland training camp October 13-16 in the Adirondacks, Elizabeth Towne and Lake Placid areas.
- An early winter on-snow training camp December 8-11 at Mont-Sainte-Anne.
- A coached trip for a team of 10 masters skiers to a destination race to be determined (e.g. American Birkebiener; last year we participated a the World Cup Masters 2011 at Sovereign Lakes, Vernon, B.C., Mar. 2-13.) Logistics, accommodations, local transportation, waxing services and on-site coaching will be offered.
What do we do?: In the summer, practices will include roller skiing, track running, trail running, strength and plyometrics and may include other activities like kayaking and mountain biking. In the fall, the dryland session activities include ski walking, ski bounding and running intervals, core and general strength, plyometrics, yoga for recovery and roller skiing. In the winter, the on-snow session activities include technique instruction on skis, intervals, endurance skiing, speed work, and ski specific strength. Both seasons will include Max Heart Rate testing for determining your training zones, video analysis, club time trials or fun races, and social events like potlucks. Other activities include waxing clinics, nutrition sessions, mental training and yoga! Most of all we get really fit and have a lot of fun doing it!
